mercury barometer

a barometer in which the weight of a column of mercury in a glass tube with a sealed top is balanced against that of the atmosphere pressing on an exposed cistern of mercury at the base of the mercury column, the height of the column varying with atmospheric pressure.

For this purpose, however, a barometer is used that is more easily carried than a mercury barometer.

When he observed that this height changed with the weather, he had invented the mercury barometer.

If we take a mercury barometer up a hill we will observe that the mercury falls.
